Tooth Extraction

Keeping a tooth that is impacted or severely damaged might be causing you more harm than good.

Do I Need A Tooth Extraction?

Some common reasons our patients in greater Tampa, FL need tooth extractions include…

Severe Decay

Extensive decay eats away at the tooth structure, often leading to fractures or infections. If left untreated, bacteria and decay can spread, compromising the health of surrounding teeth.

Oral Trauma

Tooth damage sustained in an accident or sports injury may be beyond repair. While we will attempt more conservative treatments if possible, sometimes it is best to extract the broken tooth.

Overcrowding

Patients who suffer from overcrowding due to a small mouth and too many teeth may need to have teeth removed to pave the way for successful orthodontic treatment.

Impaction

Impacted baby teeth that fail to erupt at the proper time may need to be extracted to make room for permanent teeth. When teeth are left impacted, it can lead to infection and damage to soft and hard tissues.

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure since these are the last permanent teeth to grow in, typically between the ages of 17 and 21. Many patients experience complications with wisdom teeth development and choose to have them extracted proactively.

The Tooth Extraction Process

Here is what you can expect during the procedure at Tampa Dental Wellness...

Day of Procedure

Anesthesia

When you arrive at our Carrollwood or Westchase office on the day of your procedure, we will begin by administering a local anesthetic. You and our dentists may have also agreed on additional sedation to ensure your comfort.

Incisions

When extracting an impacted tooth, our dentists will make an incision along the top of the gums to access the tooth. If the tooth we are targeting is above the gumline, this step is not necessary.

Elevation

Our dentist will move a handheld tool known as an elevator around the base of the tooth to help loosen it away from the gums. Once it is ready, the doctor will gently grip the top with dental forceps and lift it from the socket.

Finishing Touches

After the extraction, we will apply pressure to the area to slow any bleeding. Sometimes sutures are needed to close the incisions at a deep extraction site. Finally, we will place gauze over the gums and prepare you for recovery with any final instructions.

Important Recovery Instructions

Apply Pressure

Once you are home, change out the gauze and gently bite down. This will help a blood clot to form and protect the incision from bacteria. Repeat these steps every 20 minutes until bleeding stops.

Avoid Irritation

For the first few days, consume a soft foods diet and avoid chewing on the side of the extracted tooth.

Mitigate Side-Effects

Applying an ice pack to your outer jaw every 20 to 30 minutes can reduce swelling. Over-the-counter pain medications can also help with side effects like pain, swelling, and soreness.

Attend Follow-Ups

Make sure to attend your follow-up appointments so our dentists can remove your sutures and check on your recovery.
